Wow since you got her, she has gained 7lbs? That is a lot given your Vet said she has about a 7 lb frame.
So given that weight gain are you sure she isn't pregnant?
In terms of the killing of your Maltese, well I'm so sorry; but this was a rescue girl, and I suppose anything can happen until you have a very good idea over months and even years of time, it is better to crate when you can't be there in person to supervise.
