The CDC monitors hospital rates through several associations. Ask them about how to check on the surgeon as well. Checking him over daily, taking temp, palpating lymph nodes, belly, looking for swelling, redness, streaking of red, sore throat, nausea, skin eruptions - any sign out of the ordinary would warrant getting him checked out.
