Very important tip!! I just wanted to add it is never to early to start training. You can try training "sit stay" early on. It obviously won't be perfect since you have a squirmy puppy on your hands, but it's possible and will be helpful to have them understand it's not a good idea to just dart out of the door. It can later translate to other doors in the house. All you do is wait for puppy to be a little quiet and away from the expen door. Open it then. If puppy starts running towards the door, close it back up and take a few steps back. Wait a few seconds for puppy to settle back down and then try again. It will be hard on you to do this because all you'll want to do is get in there and snuggle with your new baby. Just think of it this way, you will be establishing good behaviors early on that will help prevent an escape in the future. And I mean an escape out of the front door which is extremely scary!!
