I work, 8 hrs a day, and still have 2 Yorkies. Most learn to adjust to the schedule right away...When I do stay home they ignore me and act as though I'm invading their space!! They sleep all day and party every night! Mine are litterbox trained so in the rare event I am late they are fine and don't go without!

I remember when I got my second pup, I was home on sick leave for shoulder surgery...I got up each morning and pretended to leave and closed the door to their room! right down to setting the alarm and tiptoeing around till 430pm!!! I train them from the get go!
