I do wash clothing only with other clothing, not towels, sheets, etc. I never thought about shaking the clothes out first.
You hit on the two reasons why I think I'm suddenly so bothered by this - I recently bought some new (dark colored) clothes that show EVERYTHING. And I had to buy a new washer last year....it's the kind that auto adjusts water level and everything else depending on the size of the load.

I don't know how to manually set the water level, but I'll pull the manual out and see it it'll tell me. I always left my old washer on the largest load size no matter what I put in.....now I know why!
