Shelly- my vote is incorrect threading. It may sound crazy but try inserting the thread into the needle from the opposite direction. The bobbin also has a correct direction it should come off the spool & I've been known to insert them backwards as well
You may still have a slight problem if you adjusted the tension knob trying to figure out was wrong so be sure to readjust that too.
