I'm up north and call them possums so might be certain areas of the country. Or maybe I'm just a weirdo lol But pretty sure they are the same thing.
Nugget, a miniature schanzuer we had growing up, came face to face with a possum one night. We usually just let her loose in the backyard with the light on and the one night she went to the shadowy part of the backyard and we hear her growling and barking. I go out and I hear thrashing in the bushes so I shined my light out off the porch and see her trying to get into it with a possum. Luckily, all you have to say to her is, "you want a treat" and she comes running so she made it out okay but it is still incredibly scary!
I'm glad Callie made it out unharmed!!
