On a mid afternoon potty walk yesterday with humid sunny temps in the mid-80's, my 11 month old male Yorkie--Torrey--was panting heavily with his tongue hanging out of his mouth as soon as we left the house. His pulse was racing at a frightening rate and we were scared. He practically dropped to lay down on the grass that was cooler and drank a ton of water when we returned home in ten minutes. He drinks a lot of water throughout the day. When we take four mile walks--never walk more than necessary with him in these steamy conditions, however--we stop enroute for Torrey to hydrate and he will typically act like he could go another four miles with no effort. Inside he will bask in a sunny window for hours.
My last Yorkie, Disco, would lay on the hot pavement for hours--if we'd let him--at age 10 in steamy heat and walk in the heat with ease. Realizing all dogs are different, I'm wondering if my 11 month old is just sun/heat/humidity sensitive or if there is some underlying health problem that causes him to overheat practically immediately when outside in the sun.
