personally, i wouldn't pay a deposit without some sort of contract.
i'm not completely without understanding for the breeder, but if the seller changes his/her mind at the last minute, i may get my deposit back, but i've just lost other opportunities to purchase other puppies from other breeders while i was being stringed along.
