To get up from a lying position, ROLL ONTO your side first, then drop your legs off the side of the bed while you are pushing your upper body up from the mattress with your arm....that way you dont use those stomach muscles (like trying to do crunches) and your legs will help re distribute your weight and make it easier to get into a sitting position on the side of the bed.
