I ended up getting a Singer Futura on HSN for 799 that is a combo machine and I love it. It sews beautifully and very easy to embroider. I will say that I'm still working on getting the embroidery part down. I'm still learning about stabilizers, centering items and how to use the software. Also, the machine came with all kinds of software and Singer machines support several file formats -- not like Brother which you have to get Brother-specific files (embroidery fonts and pictures). Now, I'm not knocking Brother at all because my first sewing machine is a Brother and I use it as my travel machine for class because it is a great machine. I just felt the Singer deal worked for me at the time, and I love HSN. Returns are easy and they offer easy pay on just about everything.
After reading your comment, I really took a look at what the Singer Futura can do and I most say that I do love the endless possibilities that this machine provides as far as the embroidery goes, oh and the software that comes with this machine is unbelievable. This may be a machine to try at HSN since they have such a good return policy if it doesn't work for me. We will see. I'm not going to rush. I will continue to research for the moment.
