Jack has free roam now (we have a puppy pad out for him but also put him outside several times a day) but we did not let him have free roam until he was about 2 years old - we kept him crated mainly for his safety - we have 3 cats who are much larger than he is and we were worried one of them would hurt him accidentally during play but they really don't play that rough - I think it was all in our minds... LOL
