That must be really stressful for you. I can see you're in the UK, like me, which means unlike in the states, dogs can be off-leash pretty much anywhere.
I would really try and get some training, perhaps not a dog behaviouralist (£200) but even some basic training, more like £10 a class type stuff.
Perhaps your dog is just anxious, and if you taught it that you were the pack leader, and in complete control, it could relax, and would stop barking so much.
As an opposite side from the big-bad-dog situation, I am getting pretty annoyed at all of the small dogs who attack my yorkie. They snap at his face, and jump on him. Big dogs are always lovely.
I think its largely that owners of small dogs don't feel they need to train their dogs, as their bite doesn't cause as much harm. However, I'm getting pretty cross at the amount of small dogs who bite at Ellington's face everytime we walk.
