I don't think so as long as he has all his shots and you have researched the groomer and feel comfortable with them. Callie was a bit older when she got her first hair cut and I was new to yorkies and didn't realize I was not brushing her as good as I thought and puppy hair is so easy to tangle and mat that they shaved her down and it was a shock at first but she was a cutie and now I keep her in a puppy cut all the time. I will one day grow at least a top knot out.
