I don't know. Being the only dog is a lot like being the only child. It's a lonely life. Yorkies seem to do better in pairs. Maybe he enjoyed the companionship of another dog and is missing that? I know when I had Daisy/Daphne, the rescue dog in my house for the short time I did, Gabby got pretty used to the idea of having another dog around and seemed to enjoy having a playmate. When I allowed my friend to take Daisy, Gabby got kinda sad and moped around for a few days.

Yorkies are high maintenance dogs. They NEED a lot of attention. Often times, they'll find comfort with another canine when you can't be there.

Maybe it's time your family thinks about getting him a friend?
