Be sure to keep a check on your local sales paper for Joann and hobby lobby. They both run sales where you can get patterns for 99 cents each! Also, keep an eye on eBay. I've got several patterns on there for under $5. I've also noticed that some Walmart locations carry patterns and they are cheaper. Ooooh, and check out the 'master pet clothing pattern list' at the top in this fashion forum. It is a sticky and stays at the top. I found many free clothing patterns online and linked them up.
As far as getting dirty, no. KS never gets her clothes dirty. Even the pantsuits don't need removing at potty time.
