An additional thing I do is at bedtime, I always put the newbie to bed first, and spend the rest of the time with the one that has been there....special time before bedtime, alone with the "old timer" while the "new kid" is in bed first and out of the way, special cuddle time and snuggle time and just "talking" to each other....
