Default Looks like a flea, itches like a flea, is it a flea?

Hi all,
So we had the worst week in a really long time. Basically I woke up late on Tuesday around 10-12 or so. Then I tried to go to sleep FINALLY yesterday [Thursday] around 7-8pm. I had to cram and work on the end of the semester project, and only slept for a couple of hours Tuesday.
Well last night comes around and I'm about to fall asleep and Joli starts ithing and I reach down to scratch her so she doesn't jingle her tags really just because it was annoying me. Then I felt a big bump and a little bump right next to each other right where she was itching. So I sat straight up and turned on the lamp and started inspect and found it....a bug. Which I assumed to be a flea. It looked very flea like, but I have never really had to deal with them before so I am not 100% positive.
Well I panicked, and since I hadn't slept I called the BF to see if he would go get flea stuff ASAP but he was busy. So I got my roommate (Anna) to drive us to the store (it was already like 8:45pm so they were about to close at 9). We got flea shampoo, carpet stuff, comb, etc. And came home and started at it.
I started stripping my bed and taking everything out of my room, which is where the girls spend 90% of the time.
While this was happening Anna starting washing her cats (which they get baths farely often because I am allergic and that was the terms of her getting cats while leaving with me, but one of the two is still crazy and having to hold her down for 10 minutes was not pleasant). Well I went in and help rinse her off and I saw NO fleas, none in the water none on her. But I did get a horrible bruise leaving, skin breaking through rubber gloves bite on my thumb. Ugh. And then the calm "big-ol-boy" cat (he is like a good 16+lbs and only almost a year old) had a bath and I stayed in there the whole time and looked through his thick fur and saw NOTHING.
Then it was Somi's turn because she is tiny and her fur is thin. I saw NOTHING on her either.
Then I sat with Joli and combed through ALL of her fur and saw no more fleas and no eggs. NONE!
So after all of that and doing loads of laundry the entire time I finally got to go to sleep around 4am!! LONGEST WEEK OF MY LIFE!!!!
Well today after lots of sleep (which I am still off since it is almost 3am and I am wide awake after sleeping a lot of the day, ugh) I have been watching Joli and looking through her hair. I found 1 black spec which could have been an egg, but I'm not sure. And she hasn't stopped itching really either. I put natural bug bite relieving itch stuff on the spot I had found because she was itching herself raw there. The stuff helped, but then she started itching in a different spot. And now she is acting especially sleepy and weird...given it is almost 3am, but we are never on a "normal" sleep schedule. I left my room to check on the dryer a few minutes ago and she barely lifted her head, and they ALWAYS follow me out of the room.

So basically the real point/question in all of this is, do you know of anything that might bite my baby and look something like a flea but not be a flea?

I know fleas never come alone...so I'm really confused. My girls RARELY go outside because they are pee pad trained and Joli is a bit aggressive toward other dogs. Somi goes with me places sometimes, but since she is still recovering from LP surgery she doesn't really get out of her bag except to sit in a chair next to me. And Joli is the ONLY animal on flea prevention stuff right now (Comfortis pill, for heart worms and fleas) so I really have no idea where it came from and how there was only one......so I'm starting to think it might have been something else. But I squished it and threw it away as soon I saw it, so I can't compare it's looks.

Oh and to make me sound really horrible, the worst part of the flea spoting is their fur is all gross from the flea shampoo now. It's like when I have had to use like bar soap or super super cheapy shampoo on my own hair.

But any ideas on what else the bug could be or if anyone has had a single flea experience would be much apprieciated!!! (and sorry for all the rambling...)
