I'm surprised that food manufactures are using them whole. Are they just jumping on the latest bandwagon? The hull is too hard for animals or humans to break down. If they are only doing it for fiber, they would get the same amount of fiber by grinding it and would also get the benefits of the flax seed oil, although the oil isn't very stable once it's been ground, so maybe they do it to keep the oil from going rancid. We give ground flax seed, on top of their food, but keep it refrigerated to prevent the oil from going rancid. What have you read about the danger of eating whole flax seed? I understand that you aren’t getting the full benefits, but what are the dangers. I use to grind my own, and some of the hulls weren’t ground, and just figured they weren’t doing any good, I never thought they were dangerous though.
