I did something similar with Sadie. I used a dowel rod dipped in peanut butter. That way i could treat her in position without having to be in an abnormal position myself. I kept the dowel rod in my right hand out of sight. Every step or two, if she was in position, I clicked and gave her a lick right by my left ankle. You want to be careful not to lure her around following the stick. I think heel is harder for a small dog because they are farther from you than they are all the wonderful smells on the ground. I use my voice a lot to keep her attention on me. You have to be more exciting than all the good stuff on the ground.
