I don't blame him for being fed up with crime in his neighborhood but he still took the law into his own hands---vigilante style. The problem with a gunshot is, if you are wrong, the guy is still dead
A punch to the face is assault, but you can still apologize to the person and explain the mistake you made. A gunshot can't be taken back.
