An electric fence is more of a psychological barrier in the sense that the dog will touch the fence and become "trained" not go near it. Most electric fences produce short and safe shocks which translates the psychological barrier that trains the dog to avoid the area. We went with a electric fence to protect our dogs and it is a safe alternative for protection and containment from but we have over an acre of land to cover so it was the right thing to purchase for our dogs.
