Well, some bone grafts don't take for various reasons but if you have a good Board Certified Orthopedic Surgeon, the incidence of this happening is small these days. Some times all they use is the patient's own morselized bone or they use an actual iliac or tibial dowel or other type graft when bone grafting is done - or donor bone may be used. Many ACL repairs involve bone grafting. A lot of elbow ligament repairs involve bone grafting. And it is often used in non- or mal-union of fractures. Athletes have these types of surgeries all the time and do very well. Lower limb long bone surgery is highly successful when the patient follows doc's advice to the letter. I know he's pretty bummed and I sure hope he recovers quickly and it's all over soon. Having much surgery and PT and doctor's visits are no fun.
