We know that there can be combinations of racial/ethnic designators important to authorities for certain purposes but the government, generally speaking, and most Hispanics don't make such distinctions or qualify the term "Hispanic" like the NYT is doing in this seemingly specious instance. I personally nor have many others ever heard of a person charged with a crime being so designated by a newspaper or media report before. And I've read a lot of newspapers. And that was the point - that a media powerhouse is using such a term in this case with questionable motives since they routinely do not use it - some say never have, according to the many reports of other news agencies.
