I think the larger Yorkie is a good idea for a family with children. The Yorkie personality is so strong and playful that it could be a great family pet if it is not tiny. But a dog that is 10 to 20 pounds when mature is way over the standard. If the breed is to maintain any sort of consistency then breeders do need to stay as close to the standard as possible. Floppy ears are very cute but they are not what a Yorkie is supposed to have. Breeders should not be breeding stock that produces puppies that keep getting further and further from the standard. Yorkies and other toy dogs have become the object of an obsession by the public and all kinds of underhanded "breeders" are breeding and selling "Yorkies" that do not even look like a real Yorkie. People come to YT often after buying a pup wanting to know if their puppy is purebred. While the puppy is adorable it is not a good representative of the breed.

It is very upsetting to me to see people calling themselves breeders throwing any two Yorkies together and producing dogs that are not even recognizable as part of the breed. These puppies often come with diseases and parasites because the "breeders" are only interested in making a buck and not interested in actually producing a healthy dog that is a good representative of the breed. I think over production by back yard breeders and puppy millers is just as dangerous as people who breed for tiny sizes.
