What is your goal? Can you explain more what you mean, holding the dog down? For instance, are you trying to get your pup to stay still for grooming?
Is your pup young? Puppies are usually quite active and don't like to be physically restrained. Training without hands and tiring the pup out with activity are the best ways to get them to focus, stay still, or calm down.
