Yes, they are deeper and would definately use more water. We lived in a traditional Japanese house for a year and a bath for me was out of the question due to the size (very short and I'm only 5'3) and the amount of time it would take to fill the tub - it would fill much faster in the US. It was great at the time for me to bathe my son, who was 6-18 months during that time frame. Our tub was a basic white tub, similar to the US standard but much shorter and deeper, not a beautiful circular one like in the links attached - they look like an upscale mini hot tub.
