9 months is old to start training. Since you have been able to train her to sit, down and shake? (gives paw), it sounds like you are definately making progress. I am wondering if your stay is like my "leave it". If so, I would put the treat directly in front of him with my hand over it - just enough so he could smell the treat. Little by little the hand came off and I can walk away. He'll sit there (ONLY if he can see me) until I say "go get it". Sounds like your on the right track! Keep with it, and good luck
