Default Ruptured Anal Gland

Hello Folks
Its been years since I came on a forum. Have been overwhelmed with deaths in the family, new job, change of homes and moves etc. The story of people's lives.

When I joined my babies were 6 and 8 months old. They are now nearly 5 years old. When I joined too I had a little Yorkie named Scooby who died. Maybe some of you are still around who was here back then.

Bandit my first Pom had a ruptured anal gland on Saturday night. Me and my husband was in Istanbul for 10 days and left both dogs with my MIL. She didnt know what happened, she thought he pooped and then was passing blood from his bum, and since we were on our way back that same night, she didnt go to ER with him. When we picked him up he was in a state, his whole backside was covered in thick red blood. We immediately rushed him at what was near 1am in the morning to an Emerigency Vet Clinic in another town, as our regular vet was not on call. We also didnt kniow waht it was, but vet said it was not life threatening. He was quite weak as he has lost quite a good bit of blood and was in such pain. The ER vet took car of his pain and also cleaned out the ruptured area and applied an antibiotic into the canal, which was also painful to the little darling. he has been going with me daily for cleaning and application of the antibiotics into the area.

Has anyone had this happen? Before we left, he showed no signs of a swollen gland in the back, well at least we never saw it as Poms are quite fluffy back there. Vet said he must now have the area manually cleaned every six to eight weeks. Will this rupture happen again and is this really something for me NOT to worry about? He has not eaten since this happen. I have been giving him Nutri cal to keep his strength up, but he refuses even his favorite stuff.
