It can be done either way, with or without the undergravel filter. Probably safer without... esp if you don't have a back up generator, lol. Sounds like Patrick is finding something to eat. Partial water changes help prevent salinity shock too. I think the creepy crawlies are way more sensitive to changes than are the fish.
