I hope you don't get upset with your vet about this, I know many people would just get so angry and leave the vet. Your vet is trying to get you motivated! I watch a film on obese dogs and their owners. They were working with specialists who designed great diets for the dogs. It’s very difficult for some owners to stick with a diet for their dogs. Even though the dogs were clearly miserable, and could hardly walk, the owners were still feeding the dogs cookies and cake. This is abuse, but the owners really did love their dogs, they just couldn’t help themselves. It sounds like you have a different problem altogether, someone was just feeding him over twice as much as what he needed so he gained the weight. You say you use to feed him 1 cup of food a day and he was doing well on that? You could just cut that down to 2/3 cup of food a day, and give him about 10 chopped up thawed frozen green beans. The frozen are better because they don’t contain salt, and you really don’t have to cook them, just thaw them. My vet said many people try to cut out too much food and the dog is miserable, but the 2/3 rule seems to be doable.
