It's usually best to get them spayed before their first heat. I kept putting Poppy's spay off because I was so worried about anything ever happening to her so she was spayed at about a year old after her first and only heat, but I do wish I had done it before her first heat because she did end up having a phantom pregnancy which wasn't pleasant.
