Honestly, they are compacted tightly into a box of 300 when I buy them, so they don't look quite as thick as the picture shows on the website. But I don't have problems with leakages unless one of mine gets too close to the edge. If I used the pad holders, getting to close to the edge might not happen. I don't use the pad holders bc between my dogs and the foster dogs, I'm constantly changing them out and it's easier for me. I have stained concrete floors, so a little leakage now and then isn't a problem.
