I think some of it can be redirection for gratification.

A lot of people spend money on themselves for a pick-me-up but then feel guilty about it afterward.

If you're spending money on your baby, or on your pets -- same gratification, less guilt. Oh it isn't for ME -- it is for xyz.

When my daughter was a baby, I had a HUGE problem with buying her new things. It took a lot of time and effort to stop trying to show affection via $$.

Not that you guys are doing this -- clearly some of you are taking a second look at overspending on your poochies.
