Default Housebreaking- litter training

I have been working on housebreaking and litter training my little boy. I am currently using (news paper) litter. I am wondering if anyone has opinions over the fake grass options. My goal is for him to go two places: his litter box, outside. Would it be easier on him/quicker to do a fake grass option?

Litter pros: cheap, controls smell, doesnt have to go outside while raining
Grass pros: thats why I'm asking

I live in seattle so it rains frequently.

I am using a proactive strategy. He sleeps in a crate where there is his small bed and litter box (food/water hooked up to the side of the crate next to his bed). When I wake up he goes potty. He plays for awhile, then eats, then pottys. He plays some more, then comes either another potty or nap time. Rinse. Repeat. I praise lots when he goes in the right spot, if he goes to have an accident I correct him and he gets praise after he has done it in the right place. Anyone have successful methods or tips? I cant remember exactly how I potty trained my other dogs. My vizsla has an anxiety problem so wasnt accident free till three. I'd prefer to have him trained in 1/3 of that.
