I was going to suggest that it looks stringy/oily from petting too. Our guys gets like that too when he's getting lots of love.
I remember my youngest daughter had the same issue when she was a newborn. She had lovely, long hair that people just couldn't resist touching. Drove me nuts because their greasy hands made her hair look stringy.
