Even right after a bath the hair on his head tends to stay in pieces and wavy. His ears get this way too. It looks even worse after about a week and he has some oil to it. His back tends to stay smoother and separated, but I do get to brush it better since he doesn't mind back...thinks brushing head etc is game. The below brush is what I use. It's pin/finisher though I tend to use the finisher side mostly.

Buy a pin brush that doesn't have balls on the tips. The balls damage the hair.
I agree with using a comb after brushing.
