I have had that happen also. I'm thankful that my dogs do not wonder off to far from home. Still this was not your fault. It happend and it is a very sad thing for everyone involved but I dont think that you should guilt yourself into paying for a new puppy for them. Maybe you could offer some form of payment toward a new pup if and when they do decide to get another one.
