When people ask what they should do to prepare for a small breed dog I always say stairs. Georgie has gone through the foam stairs and is now using the plastic stairs with carpet on each step that I got on Amazon. I will tell you with each new set he is a little hesitant to use them but he comes around. Especially once we put his toy at the top of them and squeak it
