I am so sorry to hear what happened to that poor dog. I, too, cannot understand how owners just don't notice their dogs are missing or leave an outlet for them to get out of.
I'm not sure about pitbulls attitude by the way it's raised though, although I'm not very knowledgeable about pitbulls. My old supervisor at work had a pitbull that she said was raised in a very loving environment, he was spoiled and everything. Randomly, one day he just attacked her and she came into work with her arm on a sling because she had to get stitches. She was horrified!
I am, for no explainable reason, scared of pitbulls myself!
But all in all, I am glad to hear that your neighbors dog is okay.
