I have the small alex in black, a large alex in black croc. and a large alex in cream with faux snake skin handles.
While my ZoE is big, I'd recommend the large no matter what. The pockets on the large are bigger also making them more functional for YOU, and the bigger size gives your pup more ventilation & room on hot days, and on cold winter days, you can put an extra blankie in there.

I went to the store today where they sell the Alex bags just so I could see the sizing and the small looked very small but the large looked massive. Is it too huge to carry around? It seems very oversized but I do want the dog to have room, especially since it isn't much more expensive than the small.
