I've read about this dozens of times and it takes place in the first year of grooming. Puppy hair is different and tends to mat much more easily. It's actually much more humane to shave rather than take all the mats out if they are close to the skin. The best way to insure that this doesn't happen again is to get all the mats out before you take to the groomer. Taking mats out can take hours and a groomer shouldn't be expected to do this. Also, after brushing you can comb next to their skin to insure no tangles are left in, which can lead to mats. Joey had problems under his arms, especially after wearing clothing and I always used a little extra conditioner there. Cowboy Magic is another great product for removing tangles mats and stickers. The good news is he’ll have what looks like a “puppy cut” in a couple of months, and you don’t have to worry about the tangles and mats for a while. His adult hair should be easier to care for, but if he's a cotton coated Yorkie, it might be easier to keep him cut short.
