Then you shake the dissolved pill/water well, and you give the dose of 1/4 of a cc! I usually take a 3cc syringe, pull the plunger out, drop the tiny pill into the syringe, put the plunger back in the syringe. You can then draw 1cc of water up into the syringe, and let the tiny pill dissolve directly inside the syringe! Before you measure out the 1/4cc, put your finger over the end and shake the mixture up well. Then you just measure out 1/4cc into a little food....I use raw ground beef. I dont know if your baby is allregic to ground beef...you can use anything that you can hide the tiny amount of liquid medicine in. You can tell your vet an RN told you how to do this, and they can show you when you go into the office...they can even give you a couple of 3cc syringes! This is how we do tiny doses in the hospital when the pill is to be divided and is too small to get it accurately done with a pill cutter! (Most meds now come in liquid form, but this served us very well down through the years!)Refrigerate the rest in the syringe, end up of course!. |
Rosie the RN, you crack me up! Thanks for the tips!
I don't know if I missed it but I didn't see the part where she was having any problem with dispensing (correct clinical term?) meds. But I will add my tip, just in case! After you purchase your Zyrtec at the Pharmacy take it to the pharmacist and he will be glad to cut it for you. Then go to PetSmart or other pet supply place and buy Greenies pill pockets they have beef, chicken, and duck flavor specifically for pups like ours! Also, Nutracal dab will go along way with a pill!
Now back on topic, I am a certified "experienced pet with extremely severe allergies owner" I know its a long title, but after several, several thousand dollars, Immunologists, Allergists, Derms, Vets meds, tests, and hours and hours of experience, I assure you: I know how you feel, I can't tell you how to "cure" your pup or how to medicate because each pup is different, regardless of similarities. Without knowing your pup the way you and your vet do I wouldn't venture to tell you what to do.
I will offer my experience and suggestions, but/and with a disclaimer, please talk to your vet before heeding ANY of my suggestions.
Suggestion 1: Please, please talk to your VET, about VARL, it truly is a great tool to be used and has truly saved Miss Mini's life.
Suggestion 2: Go with your gut, only a small number of allergies are actually caused by food, environmental is definitely more of a problem
Suggestion 3: GOO, theres a thread here somewhere and I will post it, please talk to your VET about this as well.
In the meantime, get rid of your sheepskin, wool, and any other natural bedding you many have that your dog uses (except cotton). Change your sheets daily if she sleeps with you cuz if her allergies are so severe shes probably allergic to people dander as well, purchase a floor steamer (Shark) use it, it kills alot of allergen producing particles and dust mites. Do not use any perfumey stuff on her at all OR YOURSELF UNSCENTED ALL THE WAY FOR EVERYTHING, EVEN LAUNDRY DETERGENT.
I would be happy to discuss this, I just want you to know there are alternatives to drugs, and the quality of life for you and your pup can be improved. PM me and I will be happy to compare notes!
Good luck!
