If it is family- I dont think it is really that rude. I think it depends on how you say it to be honest. Dh's Mom always makes sure everything is picked up, she will even get his food and water bowl out and put the baby gates up for him...
My Mom will put the baby gate up and make sure her cats are in her bedroom, and she will get his toys out and food and water.
I see no harm in calling them and saying something. Like I said it is all how you say it- " BF and I will be coming do you mind making sure nothing is on the floor.... or I can help you clean up... something like that.
