Usually between 5 and 6 weeks is when you can hear the heartbeats and it does sound like a fast ticking sound. some say you can differentiate the males from the females by the rate of the sound. If you are hearing it in 4 different locations it may be a good indication that there could be 4 puppies. If any of the heartbeats sound fainter and your not sure then I think that would be an indication that the sound is bouncing off one of the other pups. Especially if it is in close proximity to another stronger sounding heartbeat.
