I'm a big meanie and don't have any blankets in the whelping box, just a pad, so if I'm not there to watch every second the pups can't get buried and I don't have to yell at my mamas.
You can try adding a drop of molasses or honey to the water...they seem to go for that, just make sure you wash the container out frequently and well.
