I disagree; you can do lots to help reduce plaque formation. I think you should have your dog’s teeth checked once a year, but Joey has been on a food that claims to have a tartar inhibitor. We also brush, use Petzlife, said to soften tartar, and he chews bully sticks. At 5 1/2 he still does not need a tooth cleaning, his dentist tells me to continue doing what I’m doing. I don’t think it’s genetic, because his breeder sees him regularly and thinks I must be brushing all the time, her other dogs teeth aren't like his. I don’t know what thing I’m doing helps the most, but while I think a tooth cleaning is important, I know that there are things you can do to reduce the frequency.
