Just wondering if anyone here owns a Westie? My groomer/friend has a Westie that had puppies today...and it had ELEVEN puppies!!! Is it common for that breed to have such a large litter??? She had another of her females that had two puppies about 9 weeks ago...one died and she is keeping the other. She was SHOCKED when this female delivered eleven today! She said they just kept coming and then she'd think she was done and another would come out...then she'd think it was over...and another would come out. The last three came out and she didn't even know it because she was cleaning up the floor....she thought she was done again when the count was at eight.
If anyone knows if this is normal please let me know and also would she need a calcium supplement for the mommy dog (like yorkies do with large litters) and should she bottle feed the pups between nursings to make sure they get enough (mommy only has eight teets) and to make sure the mommy doesn't get eclampsia (don't know if that is a worry for Westies)? The puppies looked really small, like as small as Bitsy's did when they were born....but her mommy dog weighs a good 15 lbs or so (I'm guessing) and she said the other two pups that were born 9 weeks ago were not this tiny.
