I was wondering if only some dogs take to this and find it fun while others are afraid or just don't catch on. My Lola is bigger at about 5 lbs but sort of fearless, she pushes my large exercise ball around on her hind legs trying to get it to bounce, when all my other dogs have been deathly afraid of it, she also jumps off our dock into the water, so I know she likes to be active. Yet when I try to teach her the basics like sit and down she takes forever, and even after weeks of practice still does not quite get it, so we can't seem to move on from there. I blame myself since I am not a professional trainer, but then I wonder about someone like you that knows what they are doing, are each of your dogs different. |
I'm no professional trainer myself but Lilo's my first dog that i've ever trained and we just started for fun. She's always had this strange attention span and this very quick learning curve so training her was a breeze.

i train her to reduce my stress and to bond with her. We don't train Leo because it isn't something he's interested in, as well as his current health issues. His personality is just different and so is his learning curve.

Leo knows only 4 tricks, to sit, stay, come and turnaround. He's working on to lie down and to touch. He's already 6 months old and at 6 months old Lilo knew much more than he does. I personally think every dog is trainable but all of them just learn at differnt paces. We still work with Leo but with his temperament i dont think he'll ever be as fearless or quick to learn as Lilo. I think if you keep working with Lola on things she already LIKES to do and modify it to a trick you'll be much more successful in training. :] The ball touching could be modified into touch or push commands and then you can try it on something different. like to touch the wall or push a door close. Lots and lots of treats help! If you ever need help feel free to pm me.
