I'd bathe him at home. I used to bathe Razzle when he was a pup in the kitchen sink. Get a pair of puppy clippers for his nails. You can buy biogroom shampoo at most pet stores.
Grooming your own dog is just another way to bond with them. Puppy coat is kind of messy and sticks out here n there - lol - it is supposed to.
My bigger dogs when they were puppies used to love to go in the shower with me. It could be pretty funny as every time I took a shower - they'd want in too!.
I'd want to bathe him until he has been home at least two weeks. And I'd wait to take him to the groomer (if I elect to do that) for at least another month or even six weeks.
